Haines Solar Cookers LLC Selected to Provide 6,000 Solar Cookers to Darfur Refugees

San Diego, CA, February 5, 2025.

Haines Solar Cookers LLC, a leading provider of sustainable cooking solutions, announced today that it has been selected to supply 6,000 Haines Pop Open Solar Cookers to refugees fleeing the civil war in the Darfur region of Sudan. The new cookers, which harness concentrated sunlight to cook food, will be distributed in Touloum Refugee camp in Eastern Chad, where conditions are harsh, and resources are scarce.

The project is managed byFairClimateFund, a Netherlands-based social enterprise with extensive experience in implementing clean cooking programs that generate carbon credits. Since 2019, FairClimateFund, in partnership with the local NGO ADES, has distributed cardboard solar cookers in two refugee camps in Eastern Chad. These projects have been registered under the Gold Standard, generating nearly 100,000 carbon credits to date. More information about the project is foundhere.

However, recognizing the need for a more durable and efficient solution, the project has now adopted Haines Pop Open Cookers. These cookers were selected for their superior durability, ease of use, and greater ability to reduce wood fuel consumption for cooking, further amplifying the project's environmental benefits.

“These solar cookers will play a crucial role in improving the quality of life for refugees by reducing the need for wood fuel, which is both scarce and dangerous to collect in the arid Sahel region, particularly for women and girls who often face safety risks during firewood collection,” said Victor Costenoble of the FairClimateFund. “Not only will this reduce respiratory health risks from smoke inhalation, but it will also significantly cut carbon emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change.”

The new cookers are part of an ongoing effort to provide sustainable, life-saving solutions in the region. More than a million Darfur refugees, including many recent arrivals due to escalating violence, are currently living in camps across eastern Chad. Many of these refugees rely on humanitarian aid for basic survival, but resources have become stretched due to competing crises like those in Gaza and Ukraine.

Haines Solar Cookers are known for their excellent performance and ease of use. Environmental websites EcoWatch and TreeHugger have named them “best overall solar cooker.”  They are available in the U.S. on Amazon andwww.HainesSolarCookers.com.

“We are proud to be part of this important initiative that not only provides refugees with a cleaner, healthier way to cook but also supports broader climate goals,” said Roger Haines, President and Founder of Haines Solar Cookers. “We hope to expand this project to other camps in Chad with FairClimateFund.  The project will make a tangible impact in the lives of refugees while also contributing to climate mitigation through the generation of carbon credits.”
